CLASSICAL MUSIC AUTOGRAPHS.

LUIGI ARDITI Autograph Musical Quotation. Italian violinist, composer and conductor.   Carte de Visite photograph by Bassano with fine autograph musical quotation of three bars from 'Il Bacio', with vocal score below, inscribed to Madame Tolmé, London 16th May 1863 and signed by Luigi Arditi.   The photograph measures approx. 4 x 2.5 inches (including the original photographer's mount) and shows Luigi Arditi full length, dressed in a very dapper frock-coat and with one hand resting n the back of a chair. There is a narrow mounting strip at foot of verso but all else is in fine condition.  .....

LEONARD BORWICK Autograph letter Signed. British (English) pianist. ALS. 2pp. No place, no date. To [Samuel] Chappell. "It is no good my sending you my MSS: nobody but myself could make anything out of it.  So I have jotted down fragments of the theme and variation, of which Bennett can reproduce as much as he thinks necessary.  Overleaf are title and a few details regarding the piece for Bennett to arrange.  Yours truly, L. Borwick".  [He continues on a separate leaf of the bifolium:-] "Andante with Five Variations.  Written by Mozart in 1786 for a toy clock or musical box. .....

ALEXANDER BRAILOWSKY photograph signed. Ukranian born French pianist who specialised in the works of Chopin. Photograph signed "In remembrance of A. Bronowsky. London. Nov. 1938". Alexander Brailowsky is shown half-length in profile, seated at his piano with a look of intense concentration on his face.Approx 9 x 7 inches (23 x 18 cms). In fine condition. Alexander Brailowsky was in London during 1938, where he made many recordings for HMV...

ALFRED CELLIER Autograph Letter. British (English) composer and conductor.   AL. 1p. 18 Orchard Square, Portman Square, W. 13th March 1877. To Mrs [Thomas] Shapter.   "Mr Alfred Cellier has much pleasure in accepting Mrs Shapter's invitation for Friday 16th."   12mo. Approx 6 x 4 inches. Lacking integral blank leaf, else fine.   Alfred Cellier composed many pieces, including the comic opera 'Dorothy' that became the 19th century's longest running production for musical theatre. It is, perhaps, as the musical director of the D'Oyly Carte Company and for his conducting, directing and the writing of overtures for the original productions.....

ALFRED CORTOT Photograph Signed. Franco-Swiss pianist and conductor. Photograph signed "Alfred Cortot, 1936". on deckle edged post-card.  With blind stamp of the photographer Henri Manuel, Montmartre in lower right corner. Approx 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14 x 9 cms). Slight silvering to edges and with mounting traces to verso. VG. Alfred Cortot was one of the most respected of 20th century musicians and was particularly renowned for his interpretations of piano works by the romantic era composers...

WALFORD DAVIES autograph letter Signed Together with Signed Photograph with Autograph Musical Quotation. Sir Henry Walford Davies. Anglo-Welsh composer. ALS. 2pp plus integral blank leaf.  Segenbalm, 21 Fawley Road, W. Hampstead, NW.  June 17th 1911. To "Dear Sir" [Granville Smithurst]. "You speak of living in a 'lonely country village'.  It is one of the nice things about music that a lonely village can share and enjoy the loveliest tunes by Bach and Beethoven with the busiest city.  I wish you every happiness in the study and love of our art.  I have added a scrap from a new Suite of.....

IGNAZ FRIEDMAN Photograph signed. Polish virtuoso pianist and composer. Photograph Signed, "I. Friedman".  Not dated [but an accompanying letter from the agents Van Wyck indicates that it was mailed from their London office on 7th March, 1938]. Approx 9.75 x 7.5 inches (25 x 19 cms).  Some surface damage to right edge and with mounting traces to verso. VG. A nice pensive portrait of Ignaz Friedman, showing him in head and shoulders profile, looking to his left with serious, thoughtful expression.  Considered by most critics and musicians alike to have been one of the great piano virtuosi of his generation. .....

WALTER GIESEKING Photograph Signed. French born German pianist and composer. Photograph Signed, inscribed and dated "To P.D. Hinder with best wishes, Yours truly, Walter Gieseking. Febr. 1936". Approx 5.75 x 4 inches (14.5 x 10 cms).  In fine condition. Walter Gieseking is shown head and shoulders with his gaze fixed directly on the camera...

SIR CHARLES HALLE autograph Letter Signed. German born British pianist and musical conductor. Founder of the Halle Orchestra.   ALS. 1p with original envelope. No place. Wednesday, no month or year but envelope is postmarked London 1868 and the letter paper has an 1868 watermark. To Miss Mori.   "Will you kindly oblige me by taking your lesson on Friday morning at 9 o'clock instead of tomorrow?"   8vo. Approx 7 x 4.5 inches. Lacking integral blank leaf and with mounting residue to verso. The envelope is tipped onto the head of the letter. Very good.   Sir Charles Halle.....

Sir Isidor George (or Georg) Henschel.  German born British pianist, baritone singer, conductor and composer.  ALS. 3pp.  45 Bedford Gardens, Kensington.  October 22nd 1892.  To "My Dear Chappell". "On the 31st of October 1862 I made my first public appearance, playing at Berlin (at Moser's Concert Hall which has long since ceased to exist) Weber's Concertstuck in F Minor for Pianoforte with Orchestra (the then famous Liebigsche Kapelle).  As it will be just thirty years on Monday week next when I, by chance, shall sing at the Pops, do you think it would interest your.....
