LUIGI ARDITI Autograph Musical Quotation. Italian violinist, composer and conductor.   Carte de Visite photograph by Bassano with fine autograph musical quotation of three bars from 'Il Bacio', with vocal score below, inscribed to Madame Tolmé, London 16th May 1863 and signed by Luigi Arditi.   The photograph measures approx. 4 x 2.5 inches (including the original photographer's mount) and shows Luigi Arditi full length, dressed in a very dapper frock-coat and with one hand resting n the back of a chair. There is a narrow mounting strip at foot of verso but all else is in fine condition.  .....

"It is no good my sending you my MSS: nobody but myself could make anything out of it.  So I have jotted down fragments of the theme and variation, of which Bennett can reproduce as much as he thinks necessary.  Overleaf are title and a few details regarding the piece for Bennett to arrange.  Yours truly, L. Borwick".  [He continues on a separate leaf of the bifolium:-] "Andante with Five Variations.  Written by Mozart in 1786 for a toy clock or musical box. .....

To Mrs [Thomas] Shapter.   "Mr Alfred Cellier has much pleasure in accepting Mrs Shapter's invitation for Friday 16th."   12mo. Approx 6 x 4 inches. Lacking integral blank leaf, else fine.   Alfred Cellier composed many pieces, including the comic opera 'Dorothy' that became the 19th century's longest running production for musical theatre. It is, perhaps, as the musical director of the D'Oyly Carte Company and for his conducting, directing and the writing of overtures for the original productions.....

Alfred Cortot was one of the most respected of 20th century musicians and was particularly renowned for his interpretations of piano works by the romantic era composers...

Friedman".  Not dated [but an accompanying letter from the agents Van Wyck indicates that it was mailed from their London office on 7th March, 1938]. Approx 9.75 x 7.5 inches (25 x 19 cms).  Some surface damage to right edge and with mounting traces to verso. VG. A nice pensive portrait of Ignaz Friedman, showing him in head and shoulders profile, looking to his left with serious, thoughtful expression.  Considered by most critics and musicians alike to have been one of the great piano virtuosi of his generation. .....
