To William Woodall. Together with a fine contemporary portrait photograph.   "Can you help me with a contribution of ...[?] to our Loan-Collection, and with the suggestion of names of people to whom I might apply, with chances of success? LOUIS AGASSIZ autograph Presentation Inscription to Sir Charles Lyell. Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz. Swiss born biologist and geologist.  Autograph presentation, signed. To the eminent geologist Sir Charles Lyell. "Sir Charles Lyell from his friend L. Agassiz." On paper piece measuring approx. 3 x 1.75 inches (7.5 x 4.75 cms).  The presentation is probably cut from the fly-leaf of a book or scientific paper. Slight mounting traces to verso, else in fine condition. A nice association piece between two towering figures of 19th century science. Provenance: From the 19th century album compiled by the family of Dr James Copland FRS (1791-1870),.....

Credited as "the father of the computer".   ALS. 1p plus integral blank leaf. Dorset St., Manchester Sq. 10th February, 1855. To "My dear Mrs Robinson".   "I shall have much pleasure in dining with you and Dr. Skey [?] on Thursday the 22nd and hope also to pay my respects to you on Monday evening. Ever truly yours, C. "I should have written before this to thank you for your kindness in sending me your spirited and thoroughly material song [?]  - but I hoped to be able to reach the Royal Society on the 30th which unexpected business prevents me from doing.  Accept now my best thanks and with Mrs Bell's kind remembrances. Before I left Bath I committed to the care of Mr Duncan your interesting manuscript on Sterling. It was directed to you and Mr D promised to have it conveyed safely. I am returning to Ireland much improved, thank God, in my health and trust I shall be well able to meet all the unpleasant things that are likely.....

The first psychologist to be knighted.  A small archive comprising 14 ALsS, 1 TLS, 2 ANsS on postcards, 3 copy letters of his correspondent under reply, 1 ALS of his sister, Dr Marion Burt, newspaper cutting, 3 scientific papers (two of which are signed and inscribed and one a writer’s complimentary copy).  Cyril Burt’s letters comprise 37pp in total and are dated variously between 31st August 1954 and 19th July 1971. 4tos and 8vos on headed paper of Department of Psychology, University.....
