THOMAS CHALMERS Autograph Letter Signed. British (Scottish) political economist, mathematician, historian, moral philosopher and leader of the Free Church of Scotland.   ALS. 1p. [no place]. January 28th 1834. to "Dear Sir".   "May I beg from you, for the use of this day, by the bearer, Maitland's History of Edinburgh, which I shall return so shortly."   Written in a very small, neat, formal hand on a small paper piece measuring approx 3.25 x 2.25 inches, laid down on paper. With age toning and discolouration and with mounting traces to verso but in otherwise acceptable condition.   Dr.Thomas Chalmers is perhaps.....

CHARLES DARWIN Autograph Presentation Signature. British naturalist, best known for his theory of evolution. Autograph presentation signature "Charles Darwin" together with the date "July 5th 1870" on his Down, Beckenham, Kent headed notepaper.  12mo.  Approx 5.5 x 3.75 inches (14 x 9.5 cms).  Old folds and creases, slight browning and with mounting traces to verso.  In very good condition. A nice example of Darwin's signature.  This is not a signature cut from a letter or document but was specifically inscribed on a blank sheet of Darwin's notepaper for the daughter of James Copland of the Royal Society.  It is signed in his full name in.....

Grandfather of Charles Darwin and Francis Galton.   Autograph signature (initials) and three lines in his hand. September 30th 1784.   "Please to weigh the oats . . . [?] with money. For Mrs Cheney. Sept 30th - 84".  With provenance written on the verso by the original collector "Dr Erasmus Darwin - Grandfather of Charles Darwin - given to me by his granddaughter's friend - Mrs Cowan."   On paper piece measuring approx 7.5 x 2 inches. Hammond, Jun.   "A letter has been forwarded to me by the British Museum addressed to my late brother and requesting his autograph.  With this I enclose two cut from letters written to me just before his illness - he was first seriously afflicted in July 1849 and after five months of dreadful suffering expired on the 14th of last.....

February 1st, 1864.  To Professor [George Gabriel] Stokes.   "Herewith you will receive a rather voluminous extract from the paper on the effects of vibration stress (?) on iron beams.  If it is too long Dr Humphrey (?) will have the goodness to curtail it.  I shall endeavour to be in town on Thursday next and remain yours faithfully, W. Fairbairn."   8vo. 18.5 x 12 cms (7.5 x 5 inches). Possibly lacking the blank leaf of a bifolium but there is no evidence that such.....
