British Museum. 25th October 1850. To W. Parker-Hammond, Esq., Jun.   "If I am the person referred to in your note, I have great pleasure in replying to your request."   8vo. Approx 7.25 x 4.5 inches. Mounting residue to the verso of the integral blank leaf and some browning from the glue that was originally used to affix it in an album. Slight chip to lower right corner, not affecting text. All else very.....

The Great Exhibition 1851 Exhibitors Certificate.    Certificate presented to Janet Copland. United Kingdom, Class XX No.146. Exhibition of the Work of Industry of All Nations, 1851 ('The Great Exhibition). Hyde Park, London. 15th October 1851.   A large certificate on heavy paper. 51.5 cms x 35 cms (20.5 x 14 inches). Circular engraved cartouche designed by George Thomas Doo and engraved by William Dyce and engravings of the exhibitors medal, designed by William Wyon, which was presented with the certificate.   Central fold with slight edge tears. Some mounting residue along fold line on verso where the certificate had.....

The Great Exhibition (1851) Exhibitors Season Ticket. Season ticket of Admission to the Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations 1851 ('The Great Exhibition') This ticket of admission no.2670 was issued to T[homas] F[oster] Gimson of The Park, Nottingham. Staying at The Bedford, Convent [sic] Garden. It is signed by him, as was required, and this gave him admission to the Exhibition for its duration.   Stout card. 8.5 x 5 cms (3.25 x 1.75 inches). Engraved decorative border. Rules printed on verso.  In fine condition.     Thomas Gimson (formerly of Tiverton, Devon) had taken out patents for various.....

JOHN STEVENS HENSLOW Autograph Letter Signed. British botanist and geologist.  Teacher and mentor to Charles Darwin. ALS. 1p bifolium folded with integral blank leaf used as postal address leaf.  Hitchham, Hadleigh, Suffolk.  19th October, 1850.  To Parker Hammond Jr., Pampisford Hall, Cambridge.   "I have only just received your letter of the 15th, or your wishes would have been more speedily complied with.  Yours faithfully, J.S. Henslow."    8vo. 19 x 11 cms (7.25 x 4.5 inches). Some old mounting stains to verso, else fine.   John Stevens Henslow is now best known for his considerable scientific influence on the young.....

SIR JOHN HERSCHEL Autograph letter Signed. With contemporary steel engraved portrait. British (English) astronomer, mathematician, chemist and experimental photographer. ALS.  3pp.  Collingwood. November 13th 1867.  To W[alter] White, Librarian to the Royal Society. "Looking over my series of the notices of the proceedings of the Royal Society in for binding I find that I have duplicates of a considerable number as also of some of the [ . . .?] President's anniversary addresses.  At the same time I find deficient in my list the following No.s 21, 81, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98.  Should these.....

SIR JOSEPH DALTON HOOKER Autograph Letter Signed. British botanist and explorer. Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew and Charles Darwin's closest friend.   ALS. 1p plus integral blank leaf.  Royal Gardens, Kew.  Thursday, no date or year. To "Dear George".   The handwriting is in Hooker's bold but hasty hand and is somewhat difficult to decipher. It appears to read "The seeds of the ivory palm nut are sent proceed (?) by the . . . (?) Magdalena . . . " (remainder we have not been able to discern).   8vo. Approx 7.25 x 4.5 inches. Mounting traces and.....

ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT Autograph Envelope Signed. German naturalist, geographer and explorer.   Autograph envelope with 12 short lines of text in the hand of Von Humboldt, signed. Addressed to Dr. Rumker at the Observatory, the School of Navigation in Hamburg. Mentioning two other gentlemen and giving his address in Paris.   Measures approx. 5.5 x 4.75 inches. Two horizontal creases. The verso has his red sealing-wax seal still attached but lacks part of the flap. Slight marking and age toning to edges. Very good.   Alexander von Humboldt was a pioneer of bio-geography. He travelled extensively in South America between.....

The Geographical Survey of England and Wales. July 7th 1871. To E[dmund] K[ell] Blyth.   "I am not a member of the Committee of selection appointed by the School Board to consider the claims of all candidates further but I cannot doubt that your application will receive full and fair consideration." [etc].   8vo. Approx 7 x 4.5 inches. Mounting traces to verso of integral blank leaf, else fine.   Thomas Henry Huxley was one of the leading.....

ROBERT JAMESON Autograph Letter Signed. Professor Robert Jameson FRS, British (Scottish) naturalist and mineralogist. Teacher of Charles Darwin.   ALS. 1p plus integral blank leaf. Edinburgh. October 18th 1849. To "Dear Sir".   "I have much pleasure in answering your note."   8vo. Approx 8 x 5.25 inches. The integral bank leaf is partially affixed to the text leaf by the paste that was originally used when the letter was mounted in an album. There is some browning and discolouration from the aging of the paste and mounting residue to the verso of the blank leaf.   Professor Robert Jameson.....
