Carlo Matteucci was professor of physics at the University of Pisa. He is best known for his research into bioelectricity and the ability of biological tissues to generate direct electrical currents. His work influenced Emil du Bois Reymond and led to the discovery of the nerve's action potential, for which Carlo Matteucci was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society.
