FREDERICK ROBERTS V.C. AUTOGRAPH LETTER Signed.
British soldier and holder of the Victoria Cross. Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, known affectionately as "Bobs" was, arguably, the most successful British military commander of the 19th century.
ALS. 1p. Marked "Private". On stationary with embossed letterhead of the Royal Hospital, Dublin but with the holograph address 17 Dover Street, W. 17th July 1897. To "My Dear James".
"Kindly tell me privately how the enclosed proposal is likely to be viewed at the War Office. Believe me, Yours sincerely, Roberts."
Bifolium. 8vo. Approx 18 x 11 cms. Traces of mounting hinges to verso of the blank last leaf of bifolium, slight creasing. Near fine.
Roberts had been located to Ireland as commander of the forces there in 1895. This letter was evidently written when he was in London, possibly for the purpose of a meeting at the War Office. 17 Dover Street was, at that date, MacKellar's Hotel.
