GEORGE CANNING Autograph Letter Cover Signed.
British Tory statesman and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (1879). Died in office after 118 days.
Autograph letter cover front. Addressed, signed and dated in Canning's hand "Mr Hamilton, H.M.'s Vice Consul, Bulogne sur Mer. Jan[uar]y 1824. Geo. Canning". Together with a 19th century steel engraved portrait of George Canning.
Approx 12.5 x 8 cms. Slight mounting traces to edges of verso, else near fine. The steel engraving measures approx. 16 x 9 cms and is mounted on card from an album leaf.
At the date of this letter, Canning was serving in the government of Lord Liverpool as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. When Lord Liverpool resigned in 1827, Canning was chosen to succeed him ahead of the claims of the Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel.
