Julia Pardoe was an extremely gifted writer who found popular and critical success in a number of different genres. She was much admired by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and others. Described as a "fairy-footed, fair-haired, laughing sunny girl", she is said to have had a horror of aging and to have continued her girlish traits into her middle age. She died, unmarried, at the age of 58.
