Description

WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT Photograph Signed.

American politician and lawyer.  The 27th President of the United States.

Photograph signed as President. With good autograph inscription and signature.  "For Albert Halstead with regards and best wishes. The White House April 25 1909. Wm. H. Taft."

A large photographic portrait by Moffett Studio Chicago, showing William Howard Taft, head and shoulders.  Taft is shown fixing the camera with a resolute gaze.

On pasteboard. Approx 16 x 13 inches (41 x 33 cms).  Previously framed and glazed and displaying some signs of this at edges and verso.  A little chipping to top edge and corner (not touching image).

Albert Halstead was, like William Howard Taft, from Hamilton County, Cincinnati.  He had been on the staff of William McKinley and had also been a newspaper editor.  At the time of Taft's presidency, Halstead was U.S. Consul in Birmingham, England.  He was later U.S. Consul in London.  William Howard Taft had worked at Halstead's father's Cincinnati newspaper office, whilst still at school and so had probably known Albert Halstead since boyhood.  William Howard Taft was inaugurated as President on 4th March 1909 and signed this large portrait for his old friend a little over a month later. It was presumably intended to be prominently displayed in Halstead's office in Birmingham.
