Description

LAWRENCE ALMA-TADEMA R.A. Autograph Letter Signed.

Dutch born British painter known for his decadent classical scenes.

ALS.  1p.  Bleak House, Burslem.  [no date].  To [William] Woodall M.P.  Together with contemporary portrait photograph on post-card.

"I am very sorry not to have met you here but I have all the more to thank you for your kind hospitality and those you have left to attend to me [etc]. . ."

12mo. Approx 7 x 4.5 inches.  Chip to left edge and small hole near right margin (not touching text). Mounting traces on verso with part of old album leaf adhering.  Post-card photograph is by Rotary. It shows Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in profile, painting in his studio.  It measures approx 5.5 x 3.5 inches. With mounting traces on verso.

Both the letter and the photograph are from a 19th century collection made by William Woodall, the radical Liberal M.P. Bleak House, Burslem, is Woodall's own house and Alma-Tadema was evidently leaving Woodall a note on his own letter paper before departing.
